Fridge makeover with chalkboard paint

G’day ladies. How’s it going at yours?

Things have finally started to fall in place in my little apartment and I’m glad things are moving. I threw away almost 75% of what I had accumulated through out the years, keeping only what I need and I “really” need. The paint job is finally happening and by April 5th, I’m, hoping I’ll be ready to play the host to my parents who are coming to stay with me for a week. There is more than them staying with me but I’ll break the news once its happened!

Back to point.

When I first started staying with my roomies,  4 years back, we bought this refrigerator together. But when I moved out individually, I took the refrigerator with me. And since then, its been the same color- grey. This time when I moved, while transfer, it got some ugly scratches + I was starting to dislike how it looked. Everything was fine till I saw some superb chalkboard paint makeovers online- you know how it is ladies! Once you see what you want, you just won’t rest till its done. For me, “the need” gets the best of me. If i want something, I want it, and I want it now. Till the time I don’t get that, I keep looking, searching, planning for it- at times even keeping away my work. So, anywhich ways, I must have it or I’d end up keeping everything at bay. This is me, my nature. Or else, how would you justify the fact that I painted it after coming from work at 12 at night!

I sanded the front down, gave it one coat of primer and then 1 coat of chalkboard paint. One more coat is pending but I couldn’t keep the excitement to myself.

Rohan thought it was pretty lame, but I forgive him. I know it’s very cool. Also, for a person like me who often forgets to do stuff, I think it’s a great idea to finally stop forgetting. Here’s the old version

And here’s it with one coat of paint on it:

So, what do you all think? Would love a few comment or two.

P.s: some parts are coming off and i see some proud lines. Any suggestions?

  1. I like the idea of the chalkboard paint and have seen it a few places on a fridge! You are very brave Rukmini…and it turned out lovely! I can’t see the lines or any other flaws in the photo. Did you know there’s a new kind of chalkboard marker that you just wash with a damp cloth rather than rub off…looks more like a whiteboard marker. I just found out about that a few weeks ago, so I may venture into the chalkboard DIY-ing now, but didn’t like the messiness of conventional chalk…I know…I’m weird. Love what you are doing and your “Country Kitchen” sign was very cool! xo wendy

    • Hi! yes, I know about the chalkboard marker. Its available in hobby ideas but I on the other hand somehow like the conventional feel of chalk. The way it writes, the soft sound it makes on paint, the stain on my hand- love it all 🙂

  2. What a cool idea. I have heard of this paint (maybe from you?) but have never seen it. I would never think of painting my fridge with it but maybe a wall in my kid’s room.

    • Yes, I remember telling you about chalk paint. Tammy, in your country its available in so many colors… ASCP or Annie Sloan Chalk Paint is what they call it. There are neutrals, duck’s egg blue, old white- the options are endless. In India, we only get black and green :-/

  3. Yes I like it. I’ve used the chalk paint pen and DID not like it. I felt it did not wash off well. So we had to repaint. But like you love the feel of the chalk myself. I’ve used chalk paint in many places of my home. You’ll love it. Thanks for sharing your creative inspiration at Sunday’s Best.

  4. Yes I like it. I would not have had your energy to do it at midnight. 🙂

And on the blackboard / chalkboard controversy…..! – ‘chalkboard’ is an acceptable alternative which came about as a result of political correctness in the 1980s. I was working in Inner London at the time, where political correctness was a fact of life, and where a lot of these new terms were first coined. I don’t particularly see the need for this one, since I don’t see how using ‘blackboard’ can be racially motivated, but both terms are correct. 🙂

    • Rohan didn’t like it at first but loved it later!

Oh Janice, you have to listen to this. I always knew it as chalkboard paint although the board, we do call blackboard. When I sent a friend of mine to get me a can of chalkboard paint, he called me from the store, I could sense the frenzy in his voice that the man behind the counter says that there are so such thing as “chalkboard paint”. When I asked him to pass the phone and explained what I wanted, he tersely replied: “There is no such thing as chalkboard paint. It’s blackboard paint”. I was like “Okay” A can please. I wondered if I learnt it wrong all along.

Such a nice insider! I’ll update this info on my blog if that is okay with you.
